tufa towers

Mono Lake Tufa State Natural Reserve, CA

Mono Lake is known for the spectacular "tufa towers," calcium-carbonate spires and knobs formed by interaction of freshwater springs and alkaline lake water. Besides the beauty of the tufa towers, Mono Lake is home to 1 – 2 million birds that feed and rest at Mono Lake each year.  The lake itself covers about 65 square miles and is one of the oldest lakes in North America.  Don't forget to look down into the water as you will see the little brine shrimp!

There are no campgrounds in the State Natural Reserve, however, campgrounds are located nearby in Lundy Canyon, Lee Vining Canyon, and the June Lake Loop.
