Atalaya Tour – Huntington Beach State Park, Murrells Inlet, SC

Along the beautiful coastline of Huntington Beach State Park in South Carolina, lies a real castle.  Built by philanthropist Archer Milton Huntington and his noted sculptress wife,  Anna Hyatt Huntington, their home was called Atalaya, modeled in a Spanish Mediterranean style.  This served as the winter home for the couple and a place for Anna to spend time sculpting.

Today, visitors can take a self-guided tour or guided tours (based on season).  Once entered, the castle has an abandoned feel to it as all rooms stand empty but if you pause a moment, you can imagine the Huntington's life as it may have been in this little slice of South Carolina heaven.

In addition to tours, Atalaya hosts an arts and craft fair in September and seasonally, nightly ghost walks can be taken.

Hours

Opens at 6am throughout the year, however, closing time varies so check website for current times.

There is a small admission fee to visit Atalaya, check website for details.  Free guided tours offered March 1 - October 31. Audio Tour is available for an additional fee.

Huntington Beach State Park – Murrells Inlet, SC
,

This a stunning South Carolina State Park with a sweeping beach; pristine and wide open. Here you can catch some rays, shore-fish, take a dip in the Atlantic, or enjoy a long walk and look for shells.  This park also offers some of the top bird-watching on the East Coast.  Also unique to this park is the South Carolina landmark called Atalaya, the picturesque, Moorish-style winter home of Archer and Anna Hyatt Huntington, philanthropist and sculptor, respectively, who left the park and adjacent Brookgreen Gardens as their legacy.  There is an informative nature center and a boardwalk that takes you over the salt marsh, great for shore-bird viewing.  Close by is a freshwater lake which if you are lucky, you will see alligators.  Seasonally, loggerheads use this beach for nesting.

Campground:

There are 107 sites that offer free Wi-Fi, water and electrical hookups and are in close proximity to showers and restrooms. There are an additional 24 sites that are full hook-ups.  Several sites accommodate RVs up to 40 feet, others up to 30 feet.   Please note that camping reservations must be made for a minimum of two nights.  This is a dog-friendly campground and dogs are allowed on the south end of the beach.

“In myth and in legend, the Knight and the horse are forever linked. Few things are held in such great esteem by the Medieval warrior than a stalwart horse, who possesses the bold courage of his master and the quiet strength of his ancestors” (from Medieval Times website).  Enter into the castle, and you arrive in the 11th century.  Guests cheer on the six gallant knights who are vying for the title of champion.  Dine with the king and queen and enjoy a 4-course meal, all eaten without silverware,  Lots of pomp and pageantry, beautiful horses and a falcon!  Jousting and fighting with sword and shield provide excitement for the evening.  Definitely a kids’ favorite!

Mt. Pleasant/Charleston KOA – Mount Pleasant, SC
,

This camping is a family favorite as we stayed here for two months while we waited to purchase a home in the Charleston area in 2015.  Situated on the grounds of a real antebellum plantation, this campground is truly unique.  On weekends, campers can enjoy a free wagon ride tour to see the privately owned Oakland Plantation (the plantation boasts the oldest known house in Mt. Pleasant).  Other great features of the park is the 1.5 mile nature trail, a gorgeous 30-acre man-made lake where you can watch the sun set. fish or or fish (our son caught his first fish here). Campground is very close to all downtown Charleston attractions and restaurants and a only a few miles from Isle of Palms and Patriot Point.
