Monte Sano State Park has some of the best historical and rustic cabins for rent.  Built by the Civil Conservation Corp. sometime between 1935-1940,  these cabins were constructed with hand-crafted cut stone and offer the original wood floors, rustic stone fireplaces and screened porches; some even have a view!  Cabins are 500 square feet offering a studio configuration with a stocked kitchenette.  There are two-dog friendly cabins and one ADA.  Cabin reservations 256-534-3757

Sloss Furnaces National Historic Landmark – Birmingham, AL

Sloss Furnaces is truly a one-of-a-kind experience.  For over 90 years, Sloss Furnaces was essential to making iron.  It was here that men turned limestone, coal and iron ore into pig iron; utilizing a pair of large blast furnaces.  Instead of tearing down this essential piece of Birmingham history, "Sloss Furnaces National Historic Landmark is currently the  only twentieth-century blast furnace in the nation being preserved and interpreted as an industrial museum."

Visitors can take a self-guided tour through this amazing industrial site.  Time has stood still here and the photography opportunities abound.

I wouldn't recommend this tour for very young children (inherent dangers abound) and the site is not stroller-friendly.  Ask for the fun Scavenger Hunt sheet available at the Visitor Center.  Leashed pets are welcome.  Tours are free!
